FIX: SQL 6.0 Upgrade Fails if SA Default DB is Not Master

Last reviewed: May 1, 1997
Article ID: Q135349

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SQL Server, version 6.0

BUG# NT: 11016 (6.00)

SYMPTOMS

The Setup program ends with an error indicating that "DISK commands must be run from the master database," and the upgrade does not complete if the sa's default database is not master.

At the point of failure, the upgrade has completed everything except installing the MSDB and creating the registry entries.

CAUSE

Upgrading to Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0 may fail if the default database for "SA" is not the master database.

WORKAROUND

Use the SQL Server version 6.0 Setup program to rebuild the registry:

   setup /t RegistryRebuild = On

Choose the "New Install" option and give the paths to the current files. After the registry rebuild completes, start SQL Server normally, log in, and change the sa's default database back to master with this command:

   sp_defaultdb sa, master

Then, shutdown SQL Server and rerun Setup choosing the "Upgrade" option.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 6.0 This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0. For more information, contact your primary support provider.
