BUG: Tape DUMP/LOAD Timeouts Have No Effect

SYMPTOMS

Setting the tape drive response timeouts for Microsoft SQL Server 6.0 DUMPs or LOADs does not have any effect. Commands wait forever for a tape to be inserted.

CAUSE

The server is reading the wrong Windows NT registry string to get these settings.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

In the SQL Server Setup program, under Set Server Options, there is a button for Tape Support. This dialog box includes settings for how long the server will wait for a tape to be inserted into the tape drive, and whether it will fail after the first failed read of the tape. Setting these options currently has no effect. The server will always wait forever for a tape to be inserted.
