BUG: xp_sendmail Causes 17969 Error

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If xp_sendmail is used with the @query parameter and the SQL Server is not listening on the default named pipe "\\.\pipe\sql\query" the following error will occur:

   Msg 17969, Level 16, State 1
   Unable to login to SQL Server

WORKAROUND

Run SQL Setup to change the named pipe that SQL Server is listening on to the default.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server versions 6.0 and 6.5. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
