BUG: DB-Lib Client Apps Access Violation in Ntwdblib.dll

Last reviewed: May 2, 1997
Article ID: Q152024

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SQL Server, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

Upon opening a complex cursor containing a UNION, a DB-Library client application results in an access violation (AV), or results in the following error message:

DB-Library: Possible network error: Bad token from SQL Server:
   Datastream processing out of sync.
   Net-Library error 0:

The problem only occurs if the cursor declaration includes the UNION keyword. The complexity of the query determines whether the process is disconnected with the above error message or whether the client application results in an AV.

WORKAROUND

Rewrite the cursor so it does not use a UNION. If a UNION is required, you can select the data into a temporary table and then declare the cursor with a select on the temporary table.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server NT version 6.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
