BUG: Multiple Result Set Reported When GROUP BY Clause Is Used

Last reviewed: May 5, 1997
Article ID: Q152811

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SQL Server versions 6.0 and 6.5
BUG# 15009

SYMPTOMS

If you use a GROUP BY clause with the bit field (this has to be converted to another datatype, such as int, char, and so forth) will cause more than one row to be returned in the result set when only one should be expected.

This problem occurs GROUP BY clause processing during query processing time especially when there are repeated records in the table.

WORKAROUND

Rewriting the query with the DISTINCT keyword will report the correct result set.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server 6.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
