FIX: Insert into Text Column with Trigger Causes Error 711

Last reviewed: April 9, 1997
Article ID: Q154019
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5

SYMPTOMS

If you insert data into a table with a text column of more than 1,800 characters (which in turn fires a trigger containing a delete followed by an insert), all based on the same table and inserted, the following error message appears:

   Msg 7113, Level 22, State 1

Datasize mismatch detected when transferring TEXT/IMAGE value. First
   fragment page number XXX.
The SQL Server is terminating this process.

WORKAROUND

Do not use triggers on a table with a text column. If triggers are used, make sure that the text of the trigger does not include a delete operation, making use of insert, followed by an insert operation in the same trigger.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 1 for Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5. For more information, contact your primary support provider.
