BUG: SQLPrepare SQL_ERROR If SQL_AUTOCOMIT_OFF and SHOWPLAN ON

Last reviewed: April 10, 1997
Article ID: Q161594
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SQL Server, version 6.5
  • Microsoft Open Database Connectivity, version 2.65
BUG #: 16440 (WINDOWS)

SYMPTOMS

If an ODBC application has set SQL_AUTOCOMMIT_OFF, and then runs the Transact-SQL command SET SHOWPLAN ON, subsequent calls to SQLPrepare() will return SQL_ERROR. If the user then calls SQLError(), it simply returns the showplan output.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not use SET SHOWPLAN ON for prepared statements when SQL_AUTOCOMMIT_OFF is set.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5 and the ODBC driver version 2.65. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
