BUG: Update to View with Column Name Alias Fails Using Cursor

SYMPTOMS

When you update a table column using a view that contains an alias for that column and you are using a server side cursor, you may receive an Error 207 error message:

   invalid column name <table column name>

CAUSE

The error occurs because the server side cursor is called with arguments that reference the column name from the table, instead of the alias name in the view.

WORKAROUND

To avoid the problem use either or both of the following methods:

   Do not use a column name alias in the view.

   -or-

   Do not use a server side cursor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
