SYMPTOMS

When you record a module and then save the workbook as a shared file, the following warning message is displayed:

VBA modules cannot be edited in shared files.

You can, however, choose to Record At Mark , which will display the Stop Record button and record a Visual Basic module command. The following error message will be displayed as soon Microsoft Excel tries to write the command to the module sheet:

   Can't edit module.

CAUSE

It is not possible to edit a module or record a new macro in a sheet that is part of a workbook that has Multi-User Editing enabled.

WORKAROUND

To edit a module or record a new macro in a file that has Multi-User Editing enabled, use the following steps to disable Multiple-User editing:

  1. On the File menu, click Shared Lists.

  2. Select the Editing tab.

  3. Clear the Allow Multi-User Editing check box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
