SYMPTOMS

In the versions of Microsoft Excel listed at the beginning of this article, when you display a custom dialog sheet that contains a check box, you may receive the following error message:

   Run-time error '1004':
Show method of DialogSheet class failed

CAUSE

You may receive the run-time '1004' error message when the following conditions are true:

  • The dialog sheet contains an edit box that has the Edit Validation option set to Reference. (To view this option, click Object on the Format menu, and then click the Control tab.)

        -and-

  • You run a Sub procedure that displays the dialog sheet, you enter a range into the edit box, and you select or clear the check box.

NOTE: If there is no range reference placed into the edit box, but the check box is either selected or cleared, the Sub procedure assigned to the check box will not run and the dialog sheet is dismissed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
