WD97: Illegal Operation Opening Form Field Options Dialog

Last reviewed: February 11, 1998
Article ID: Q163807
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to view the Options dialog box for a form field (right- click the field and click Properties on the shortcut menu), you may receive the following error message:

   This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut
   down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

When you click the Details button, the message states:

   WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in module MSO97.DLL at
   0137:30733613.

CAUSE

This error may be caused by having two or more Visual Basic for Applications modules each containing subroutines with the same name in the Normal template.

For example, the following scenario will cause the error:

   Module name         Macro name
   ------------------------------

   Module1             Main()

   Module2             Main()

RESOLUTION

Rename the macro or macros so they contain unique names. For example:

   Module Name         Macro Name
   ------------------------------

   Module1             Module1Main()

   Module2             Module2Main()

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
