XL97: Error Opening Add-in with Macro

SYMPTOMS

When you run a procedure in Visual Basic for Applications, the following error message may appear after the procedure opens an add-in file:

   Run-time error '1004':

   Cannot open Microsoft Excel 97 Add-in for editing. Please edit the
   source document instead.

CAUSE

This error occurs when the following conditions are true:

• The procedure opens a hidden workbook.

      -and-
  

• The procedure opens an add-in by using the Open method with the Notify:=False argument.

To work around this problem, include the Editable:=False argument in your Open statement. For example, use code similar to the following:

   Workbooks.Open FileName:="C:\Test.xls", ReadOnly:=True, Notify:=False,
   Editable:=False

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel 97 SR-1.
