The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visual C++ for Windows, version 1.5

SYMPTOMS

When double-clicking the Books Online icon in the Microsoft Visual C++ Program Manager group, the following errors may occur:

   Could not find file: <drive>:<path>\VCBKS15.HDX referenced in section
   [vcbks15] of CONTENTS.INI. This may be due to a CD-ROM or network
   location that is no longer present.

   -or-

   LoadHelpIndexFile():File <<drive>:<path>\VCBKS15.HDX> is missing!

   -or-

   Could not load help index

Each of the above messages appears in separate message boxes.

CAUSE

The error messages occur if another CD was used in the CD-ROM prior to running Books Online. The CD-ROM is not aware that the CDs have changed and doesn't see the Visual C++ 1.5 CD in the CD-ROM; instead, the CD-ROM sees the previous CD.

RESOLUTION

The problem can be easily fixed by doing one of the following:

  • Start Windows's File Manager and double-click the CD-ROM driver such that the directory of CD-ROM is displayed. Press F5 to refresh the CD- ROM directory. After performing these steps, you can start Books Online and will not receive the errors.

    -or-

  • Go to the MS-DOS prompt and change to the CD-ROM drive. Create a directory listing by typing "dir". Lastly, start Books Online. You will not receive the errors.
