The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visual C++ for Windows, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

When adding additional libraries in the Visual Workbench Link Options, a General Protection Fault may occur in MSCOPTS.DLL or the Visual Workbench may hang. The problem typically occurs when there is a large number of link libraries.

RESOLUTION

To work around the problem, remove some of the libraries from the project by manually editing the makefile or by creating a new project. After the General Protection Fault occurs, exit and restart Windows, as the error may still occur when selecting the linker options dialog even after the libraries have been removed from the list of link libraries for the project.

To avoid the problem and still be able to use all of the libraries, add the libraries to the project through the Project menu. This can be done by selecting Project from the main menu and then choosing the Edit menu item. At this point the Edit dialog box will be displayed and the libraries can be added to the project.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This is not a problem in Visual C++, 32-bit Edition. This problem was corrected in Visual C++ version 1.5.
