The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visual C++ for Windows, version 1.5

SYMPTOMS

When installing Visual C++ on a machine that is running Windows NT, the setup program will allow the installation of CodeView for Windows, even though CodeView for Windows can't run under Windows NT.

RESOLUTION

When installing Visual C++ version 1.5 on a Windows NT machine, turn off the selection to install CodeView for Windows. This can be done by choosing the Custom Installation choice from the Installation Options dialog box and then clicking on the Tools button in the Custom Installation dialog box. When the Tools Options dialog box appears, clear the CodeView/W choice in the Windows Tools group.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with the Setup program for Visual C++ for Windows version 1.5. We are researching the problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

CodeView for Windows uses the virtual device driver CVW1.386, which cannot be loaded by Windows NT. For more information about which versions of CodeView run on various hardware platforms, please see Knowledge Base article Q111503, titled:

PRB: Error: CVW1.386 Is Not Loaded In SYSTEM.INI.

The setup program correctly does not allow the installation of other non-Windows NT tools, such as the Debug Kernel.
