The information in this article applies to:

  • The C Run-time (CRT), included with:

        - Microsoft C for MS-DOS, versions 6.0, 6.0a, and 6.0ax
        - Microsoft C/C++ for MS-DOS, version 7.0
        - Microsoft Visual C++ for Windows, version 1.0

MS-DOS allows you to set an APPEND path to locate data files. Microsoft C library functions such as open() and fopen() will not ignore the APPEND statement, even if a full pathname is given to the specific function.

This is expected behavior. If you want to have the APPEND path ignored, you will have to write your own low-level open() function, or make sure that the APPEND path is removed before your program is run.
