The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Win32 Device Development Kit (DDK) for Windows NT, versions 3.5 and 3.51

SUMMARY

Windows NT current supports streams style transport drivers. However, no further enhancements or changes will be made to the interface. Developers beginning drivers under Windows NT should use the TDI interface.

MORE INFORMATION

Although Microsoft intends to continue the support of legacy streams drivers in Windows NT, the interface is not designed for high performance or for full functionality. Microsoft intends to make no further enhancements or changes to the existing streams interface as exposed in the Windows NT DDK. To take full advantage of the capabilities of Windows NT and to maintain good performance, developers should use the TDI interface and not streams. Under no circumstances should developers begin a streams driver today as there is no benefit in using this interface and there is a penalty in performance.
