PRB: Services Are Made Manual Start by Microsoft Cluster Server

Last reviewed: March 9, 1998
Article ID: Q182194
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Win32 Software Development Kit (SDK)
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server Enterprise Edition version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

The Generic Service resource DLL changes the startup type of the service it controls to SERVICE_DEMAND_START, which is the value for manual startup.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The state that Cluster Server records for a resource should be consistent with the real state of the resource. If a service is set to automatically start, the system will try to start the service during system startup. This happens even if Cluster Server believes the resource is offline. To avoid this inconsistency, the generic service resource type sets the service to manual start so that it will only run when it is started by Cluster Server.
