Windows 3.1 Setup Replaces _DEFAULT.PIF and DOSPRMPT.PIF

Last reviewed: November 30, 1994
Article ID: Q81682
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.1, 3.11

If you install Microsoft Windows over an existing copy of Windows, the Setup program overwrites the _DEFAULT.PIF file. These files are overwritten by design to ensure that the Windows 3.1 updated versions are in place.

NOTE: If the file attributes of _DEFAULT.PIF and DOSPRMPT.PIF are hidden, system, or read-only, the Setup program prompts you before overwriting the old files.
