SUMMARY

There are three printer drivers that support the Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskJet family of printers in Microsoft Windows and Windows for Workgroups. The HP DeskJet family of printers includes the HP DeskJet, DeskJet Plus, DeskJet 500, DeskJet 500C, DeskJet 510, DeskJet 520, DeskJet 540, DeskJet 550C, and DeskJet 560C.

MORE INFORMATION

The Microsoft HP DeskJet series universal printer driver (HPDSKJET.DRV) supports the HP DeskJet (original), DeskJet Plus, DeskJet 500, and DeskJet 500C. This printer driver supports the following features:

  • Monochrome printing (text and graphics).
  • TrueType scaleable typeface font support.
  • Internal HP printer fonts, soft fonts, and plug-in cartridge fonts (except printer emulation cartridges, landscape font support for cartridges 22707K and 22707L, and internal landscape font support).

The HP DeskJet series version 3.11 printer driver (DESKJET.DRV) available from HP supports the HP DeskJet (original), DeskJet Plus, DeskJet 500, and DeskJet 500C. This printer driver supports the following features:
  • Color printing on the HP DeskJet 500C.
  • Intellifont typeface.
  • Landscape fonts with cartridge 22707K or 22707L.
  • Internal landscape fonts.

The HP DeskJet series version 5.x printer driver (DESKJETC.DRV) available from HP supports the HP DeskJet 500, DeskJet 500C, DeskJet 510, DeskJet 520, DeskJet 540, DeskJet 550C, and DeskJet 560C. This printer driver supports the following features:
  • Color printing on the HP DeskJet 500C, 550C, and 560C.
  • No Intellifont support.
  • No internal font support.
  • Landscape-orientation envelope support for the HP DeskJet 510, 520, 550C, and 560C.
  • ColorSmart technology.
  • 600 x 300 capability for enhanced print quality in black text printing on the HP DeskJet 520 and 560C.

You can install both the Microsoft HP DeskJet universal printer driver and the HP DeskJet series version 5.x printer driver in Windows at the same time, but one of the printer drivers can be active. You can switch between the printer drivers as needed in Control Panel and in some applications.

You cannot install both the HP DeskJet series version 3.11 and version 5.x printer drivers in Windows. If you install a version 5.x printer driver over an existing version 3.11 (or older) printer driver, the version 3.11 (or older) printer driver files will be overwritten and the version 5.x printer driver will become the active driver.
