Error Message: "VNETSUP: Error 6102"

SYMPTOMS

After you set up Windows 95 to work in a network environment, you receive the following error message:

   The following error occurred while loading the device VNETSUP:
   Error 6102: The string specified by the WORKGROUP keyword in the
   registry is too short.

CAUSE

The registry was not correctly updated with your workgroup name information during Setup or when you changed the workgroup name.

RESOLUTION

To correct this error, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the Network icon.

  3. On the Identification tab, type the correct workgroup name in the Workgroup box.

  4. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
