"@" Character in Computer Name Causes OLE Error Messages

SYMPTOMS

When you are performing an object linking and embedding (OLE) task, you may receive one of the following error messages:

  • Failed to create object. Make sure that the object is entered in the system registry.
  • The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.
  • Cannot insert object.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if your computer's name contains the "@" (at sign) character.

RESOLUTION

Change your computer's name. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Double-click the Network icon in Control Panel.

  2. On the Identification tab, change the name in the Computer Name box so that it does not contain the "@" character.

  3. Click OK.
