Error Message Changing the Default Language

SYMPTOMS

When you change the default language to Belarusian, Bulgarian, Polish, Russian, Slovenian, or Spanish, you may receive the following error message:

   Windows could not change the default language because it does not
   match the character set (code page) that your computer is currently
   using. Choose another language.

CAUSE

This error occurs because the regional settings do not match the default language.

RESOLUTION

To change the default language, follow these steps:

  1. In Control Panel, double-click Regional Settings.

  2. On the Regional Settings tab, click the language you want to use, and then click OK.

  3. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.

  4. In Control Panel, double-click Keyboard.

  5. On the Language tab, click the language you want to use in the Language box, and then click Set As Default.

  6. Click OK.

NOTE: The Polish and Russian languages generate the error message stated above if you try to set them as the default language. Instead, change to the appropriate language by pressing the ALT+SHIFT key combination. Then, shut down and restart the computer.

To install multilanguage support, follow these steps:

  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.

  2. On the Windows Setup tab, click the Multilanguage Support check box to select it, and then click OK.

  3. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.
