Computer with NeoMagic Display Hangs When PC Card Is Inserted

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a PC Card device into a computer running Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 or 2.1, the computer may stop responding (hang). This behavior may occur on computers that use a NeoMagic display adapter.

CAUSE

During enumeration of a PC Card device, memory reads may be performed at addresses that are not mapped to physical RAM, causing the computer to hang.

RESOLUTION

This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2):

   Vmm.vxd version 4.00.1112, dated 7/2/97 11:12am, 408,096 bytes

This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95 OSR2.1 (USB Supplement):

   Vmm.vxd, version 4.03.1215, dated 8/4/97 12:15pm, 428,576 bytes

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) and 2.1. An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.

This problem is resolved in Microsoft Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2.5 and in Microsoft Windows 98.
