Err Msg: Insufficient Privilege to Save the Key

SYMPTOMS

When you are trying to save a Registry key from a remote machine's Registry in Windows NT, the Save Key dialog box will display the local hard disk even though it is not possible to save the key to the local drive. If you do not have the Administrator privilege on the remote machine, the following error message will occur:

   Insufficient Privilege to Save the Key.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1 and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

1. In File Manager, choose Run from the File menu.

2. In the Command Line box, type "REGEDT32.EXE" (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER.

3. When the Registry Editor opens, choose Select Computer from the Registry menu.

4. Type the name of a remote machine and press ENTER.

   You will receive the HKEY_USERS and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hives from the remote machine.

5. Select any of the keys on either of these two hives.

6. From the Registry menu, choose Save Key. You will receive a Save Key dialog box.

7. In the File Name box, type "C:\TEST.TXT" (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER.
