The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

You may experience problems working with files from a shared NTFS directory on a Windows NT computer from an MS-DOS computer. When filenames are not long, that is, when they fit into the "8.3" FAT filename convention, spaces are not removed. For example, if the following filename is in an NTFS directory, the MS-DOS client would see no change:

   A TEST.BAT

When you try to copy this file or perform other file operations, filename error messages appear.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. This problem was corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. For information on obtaining the Service Pack, query on the following word in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (without the spaces):

   S E R V P A C K
