SNMP Always Returns an Error Index of OneLast reviewed: May 14, 1997Article ID: Q112871 |

SYMPTOMSWhen a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) management station sends multiple requests within a single SNMP packet and one of those requests is in error, the response from Windows NT always indicates that the error occurred on the first request. This misleads management stations that send multiple requests in a single packet and require specific responses.
CAUSEThe length of an SNMP query is always passed as one through the Microsoft SNMP APIs. When the SNMP extension agent receives this request, the only error index that can be returned is one.
RESOLUTIONA correction was made to MGMTAPI.DLL to pass the correct length of an SNMP query.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. For information on obtaining the Service Pack, query on the following word in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (without the spaces):
