The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMSWhen the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) service processes very short Object Identifiers (OIDs), the service terminates with an access violation.
CAUSEThis problem occurs when the algorithm used to decode an SNMP OID of length less than 2 results in an invalid pointer reference.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1.
