Server Service Does Not Register Properly with WINS

SYMPTOMS

When you restart the Server service, it does not register properly with Windows Internet Name Service (WINS).

This symptom occurs after the Server service properly deregisters with WINS when you stop the Server service by running Control Panel, choosing Services, and then choosing Stop.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, shut down the Windows NT server and restart.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.51. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
