Remote Procedure Call Service Cannot be Paused or Stopped

SYMPTOMS

You may receive the following error message when you type NET STOP RPCSS or NET PAUSE RPCSS to stop Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service from a command prompt:

   The requested pause or stop is not valid for this service.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
