Unnecessary DNS Zone Transfers

SYMPTOMS

Zone transfers take place, even when no data has been changed on the primary Domain Name System (DNS).

CAUSE

The SOA serial number may be inadvertently incremented, causing unnecessary notifies to secondaries, which cause unnecessary zone transfers.

RESOLUTION

Apply Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 2 or later.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0. This problem was corrected in the latest Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 U.S. Service Pack. For information on obtaining the service pack, query on the following word in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (without the spaces):
