DHCP May Not Assign a Default Gateway to Windows NT Clients

Last reviewed: January 2, 1998
Article ID: Q167049
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server versions 3.5, 3.51, and 4.0

SYMPTOMS

If the domain host configuration protocol (DHCP) server is configured with an incorrect "Option 003 Router" (a default gateway address), Windows NT clients will not be assigned the default gateway address. However, client computers running Windows 95 will receive the incorrect default gateway address.

CAUSE

By definition, a default gateway must be on the same subnet as the IP address of the client. Windows NT prevents a bad default gateway from being used, and Windows 95 does not.

RESOLUTION

Configure the DHCP server for the correct "Option 003 Router" address.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
