DHCP May Not Assign a Default Gateway to Windows NT ClientsLast reviewed: January 2, 1998Article ID: Q167049 |
The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMSIf the domain host configuration protocol (DHCP) server is configured with an incorrect "Option 003 Router" (a default gateway address), Windows NT clients will not be assigned the default gateway address. However, client computers running Windows 95 will receive the incorrect default gateway address.
CAUSEBy definition, a default gateway must be on the same subnet as the IP address of the client. Windows NT prevents a bad default gateway from being used, and Windows 95 does not.
RESOLUTIONConfigure the DHCP server for the correct "Option 003 Router" address.
STATUSThis behavior is by design.
