DNS Admin Fails When Managing Large Number of Zones

Last reviewed: March 18, 1998
Article ID: Q170518
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When the Domain Name Service (DNS) Admin tool is used to configure DNS for a large number of DNS zones (over 1,000), you may experience one of the following:

  • The following Dr. Watson error:

The application, dnsadmin.exe/DNSadmin.dpg, generated an application
error. It occurred on MM/DD. The exception generated was C00000005 at
          address XXXXXXXX (RTL destroy heap).

    -or-

  • DNS Manager may hang or stop responding. When you select a zone name and then click Properties from the context menu the Properties dialog box does not open and the cursor remains an hourglass. You may also notice that the available system memory steadily decreases.

A Performance Monitor log of your system shows that the private bytes counter, associated with the Dnsadmin.exe process, increases dramatically as available system memory dramatically decreases.

RESOLUTION

Obtain the following fix or wait for the next Windows NT service pack.

This fix should have the following timestamp:

   06/17/97 08:13 PM 137,488 Dnsadmin.exe (Intel)
   06/17/97 07:13 PM 187,664 Dnsadmin.exe (Alpha)

NOTE: Service Pack 3 must be applied to Windows NT 4.0 prior to applying this fix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
