DDEML: Memory Leak in Global Shared Memory

Last reviewed: October 20, 1997
Article ID: Q170626
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

A DDEML client performing frequent Connect/Advise operations alternating with frequent Unadvise/Disconnects on the same server, topic, or item may cause the server to leak globally shared memory. The leakage will progress until there will be insufficient resources to run any applications besides the server. At this point, the server must be closed to free up memory.

CAUSE

When the client DDEML window is destroyed by a call to DdeDisconnect, there are still posted messages in the queue to this window, causing this leak.

RESOLUTION

Obtain the following fix or wait for the next Windows NT service pack.

This fix should have the following timestamp:

   06/09/97 07:28 PM 1,233,328 Win32k.sys (Intel)
   06/09/97 06:28 PM 2,043,120 Win32k.sys (Alpha)

NOTE: Service Pack 3 must be applied to Windows NT 4.0 prior to applying this fix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
