The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMSA system will leak pageable memory when a large amount of mounts and dismounts are done on an NTFS partition.
CAUSEThe driver Ntfs.sys was not releasing memory acquired on a mount request on a dismount request. The memory leak is small, so the problem will usually show up after a period of days. Poolmon can be used to check this problem. Look for FSrtl tag taking up a lot of the pageable memory. Performance Monitor can also be used to monitor pageable memory use.
RESOLUTIONMemory is now released appropriately
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
