Memory Leak in FPNW Causes Windows NT Server to Hang

SYMPTOMS

A memory leak in File and Print Services for NetWare (FPNW) may cause Windows NT to stop responding (hang). Performance Monitor shows private bytes for Nwssvc.exe growing excessively until the system hangs.

CAUSE

Memory allocated during a logon attempt is not being freed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the following fix or wait for the next Windows NT 4.0 service pack.

This fix should have the following time stamp:

   01/22/98  12:59p               244,128 Fpnw.dll (Intel)
   01/22/98  12:37p               225,600 Fpnwsrv.sys (Intel)

   01/22/98  12:55p               438,544 Fpnw.dll (Alpha)
   01/22/98  12:33p               442,736 Fpnwsrv.sys (Alpha)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
