Clients Cannot Send Mail Attachments Through Modem Sharing

Last reviewed: March 9, 1998
Article ID: Q182205
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server version 4.0 and 4.0a

SYMPTOMS

Small Business Server (SBS) clients running on Windows NT version 4.0 with modem sharing enabled will get poor performance when sending mail with a large attachment, or when uploading a file using FTP. E-mail can be sent through modem sharing; however, the mail client will time-out if a large attachment is send with the mail.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the following fix or wait for the next Windows NT service pack.

This fix should have the following time stamp:

   03/04/98 11:18a 27,952 Serrdr.sys (Intel)
   03/04/98 11:20a 51,696 Serrdr.sys (Alpha)

Please note that this is a client-side issue and the fix will need to be applied on the SBS client running on Windows NT version 4.0.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Small Business Server version 4.0 and 4.0a. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
