SUMMARY
Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1 can now be installed
on computers with a PCI-bus IDE hard drive controller. Microsoft has
released an updated ATDISK.SYS driver to work with these controllers.
This fix should ONLY be used on computers with PCI IDE controllers.
NOTE: This fix will not be included in any current or future Windows NT
version 3.1 Service Pack (CSD) releases. Future versions of Windows NT will
not require this driver.

PCIATDSK.EXE is a self-extracting file containing the files ATDISK.SYS and
README.TXT. You can find PCIATDSK.EXE, a self-extracting file, on the

After you download PCIATDSK.EXE, copy it a directory on your hard drive and
type "PCIATDSK" (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER to extract
the files ATDISK.SYS and README.TXT.
Steps to install ATDISK.SYS on PCI IDE Computers
- Follow the instructions for Floppy or CD-ROM based installation as
described in the Microsoft Windows NT "System Guide".
NOTE: The first part of the installation is in text mode. Setup will
copy several files to the hard disk.
- Setup will then prompt you to restart the system and to continue in
graphics mode. IMPORTANT: Intercept the installation process at this
stage by inserting an MS-DOS boot disk in the floppy drive and
restarting your computer.
- Rename the file ATDISK.SYS in the <winnt>\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS
subdirectory to ATDISK.OLD
- Copy the new ATDISK.SYS to the <winnt>\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS subdirectory.
- Remove the MS-DOS boot diskette, restart your computer, and continue
with the rest of the Windows NT installation procedure.
