The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

Text formatted with Annotation Reference, Footnote Reference, or Line Number styles in a Word 2.x for Windows document will be converted to the Normal style when you open the document in Word 6.0 for Windows.

CAUSE

Word 6.0 has two types of styles: character styles and paragraph styles. Annotation Reference, Footnote Reference, and Line Number are character styles in Word 6.0. Word 2.x has only paragraph styles.

You cannot convert a paragraph style into a character style and maintain the paragraph formatting. Therefore, when text formatted with one of the above styles is converted from Word 2.x to Word 6.0, the corresponding character style is created and the Normal paragraph style is applied.
