WD: File Save Does Not Keep Levels Hidden in Outline View

Last reviewed: February 2, 1998
Article ID: Q106502
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word for Macintosh, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, 6.0, 6.0.1

SYMPTOMS

When you save a document from outline view with hidden (collapsed) levels, close it, and then reopen it, all hidden levels are shown again.

CAUSE

Word does not save information on viewing levels (used in outline view). Therefore, when you reopen a document, all levels appear when you view the document in outline view.

STATUS

This behavior is by design for the versions of Word listed at the beginning of this article. Note that this behavior does not occur in Word 97 for Windows or Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition: These versions will save information on viewing levels (used in outline view).
