The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

When you choose Bullets And Numbering from the Format menu, the Multilevel tab is unavailable. Only the Bulleted and Numbered tabs appear.

CAUSE

The first paragraph of the text you selected is formatted with one of the heading styles (for example, Heading 1). Multilevel numbering is intended for paragraphs that have various indent levels. If your text includes paragraphs that have been formatted with heading styles, choose the Heading Numbering command from the Format menu.

When the first paragraph in the selection is formatted with a style other than a heading style, the Multilevel tab will be available.
