Inserting Page Numbers Interferes with Section Alignment

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word version 6.0 for Windows, if your bottom margin is 0.69" or less and you do one of the following, the vertical alignment for the section jumps to the top of the page, even if "Center" is selected for the section's vertical alignment:

  • You choose Page Numbers from the Insert menu and select bottom of page.
  • You insert a frame into the footer.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem:

  • Set the bottom margin of the document to .70" or greater.

    -or-

  • Insert a page number field instead of inserting Page Numbers. To do so:

    1. From the Insert menu, choose Field.

    2. From the Insert Field Type list, select Page.

    3. Choose OK.
