Error Running Quick Preview: "...Opening a Word 1.x Template"

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SUMMARY

When you run the "What's New" Quick Preview demonstrations, the following error message may occur during the AutoFormat portion of the demo:

Word is opening a Word version 1.x for Windows template. Macros
from Word 1.x for Windows cannot be converted and will be lost
if this file is saved in Word 6.0 for Windows format.

After you choose OK to close the error message, the demo cursor moves to several locations on the screen, the initial Quick Preview screen appears, and then the demo stops. You should be able to exit the demo at this point.

CAUSE

This happens if the first template in your TEMPLATE directory is a Word 1.x template such as ARTICLE.DOT. The AutoFormat portion of this Quick Preview demonstration automatically selects the first template in the Style Gallery dialog box. When the first template is a Word 1.x template, the above error occurs.

Your Word 1.x templates may appear in the Word 6.0 TEMPLATE subdirectory if you installed Word 6.0 over an existing installation of Word 1.x. It may also happen if you first installed Word 2.x over Word 1.x, then installed Word 6.0 over Word 2.x. In either case, Setup places your Word 1.x templates in the Word 6.0 TEMPLATE subdirectory.

WORKAROUNDS

  • Rename the Word 1.x template so it is no longer the first template on the list in the Style Gallery dialog box. For example, rename ARTICLE.DOT to X_ARTICL.DOT.

    -or-

  • Save the Word 1.x template in Word 6.0 file format. The drawback to this workaround is that you may lose some functionality in your Word 1.x template.

    -or-

  • Save the Word 6.x template with a name that will cause it to appear first alphabetically, in the template directory, such as AAAA.DOT. This is useful if you have several 1.x templates that appear at the top of the directory
