Insert Frame in Normal View Header Produces Incorrect Message

SYMPTOMS

If you choose Frame from the Insert menu while you are viewing a header in Normal view, Word 6.0 for Windows incorrectly displays the message "Click and drag to insert a frame."

NOTE: In Word 6.0, you can open a header or footer pane while you are in Normal view by running the NormalViewHeaderArea macro command. Viewing the header and footer panes in Normal view is not a feature of Word 6.0; however, the NormalViewHeaderArea command does mimic this Word 2.x feature.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows version 6.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Word 6.0 does not offer a standard menu or toolbar option to display headers and footers in Normal view. However, the NormalViewHeaderArea command, which can be used in macros or assigned to menus and toolbars, allows you to do this.

If you use this command to view a header in Normal view, and you choose Frame from the Insert menu, Word displays the message "Click and drag to insert a frame" in the status bar. However, the mouse pointer remains in its pointer shape (it does not change to a cross-hair pointer); you cannot click and drag the frame.

If you are in Normal view, and you choose Frame from the Insert menu, Word normally prompts you to change to Page Layout view to define the frame. If you are in Page Layout view, and you choose Frame from the Insert menu, the mouse pointer changes to the cross-hair pointer for positioning the frame.
