"Low Memory" Errors or GP Fault Updating Many Links

Last reviewed: February 6, 1998

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you simultaneously update many links (typically from 80 to 200) in a Word for Windows document, "Low memory" error messages or a general protection (GP) fault in WINWORD.EXE may occur. If you opened your document without automatically updating the links, a "Low memory" error message may occur when you scroll through the list of links in the Edit Links dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows. This problem was corrected in version 6.0a and later of Word for Windows.

WORKAROUND

Prior to obtaining the Word 6.0a Patch, you should turn off the Update Automatic Links At Open option. (To locate this option, choose Options from the Tools menu and select the General tab.) If you need to manually update links before you obtain Word 6.0a, update fewer links at a time.

The most current version of Word 6.x for Windows is Word 6.0c. To obtain this update, contact the Microsoft Order Desk at (800) 360-7561 and request the Word 6.0c update. If you are outside the United States, contact the Microsoft subsidiary for your area. To locate your subsidiary, see the Microsoft World Wide Offices Web page at:
