Footnote and Endnote Reference Styles Cannot Be Applied

SYMPTOMS

After you apply the Footnote Reference or Endnote Reference style to selected text in Word 6.0 for Windows, the subsequent text will not retain the style, reverting to the Normal style instead.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. Word inhibits the use of these styles except for footnote or endnote reference marks.

WORKAROUND

Base a new custom style on the Footnote Reference or Endnote Reference style.
