The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1, 6.0

SYMPTOM

In Word, the following error message appears after choosing Grammar from the Tools menu:

Low on memory. Close windows and save your documents.

CAUSE

Word needs a larger memory allocation to run the Grammar Checker.

RESOLUTION

Make more memory available to Word as follows:

System 7 and System 6 MultiFinder

If you run System 7 or System 6 MultiFinder, boost the memory allocation to Word by following these steps:

  1. Quit Word.

  2. In the Finder, highlight the Microsoft Word icon.

  3. From the File menu, choose Get Info.

  4. Enter 2048 in the text box for the Preferred or Current memory size (the text box you have depends on the operating system version).

Note: Although 2048K is the recommended memory allocation for using the Grammar Checker, Microsoft has found in testing that allocating as little as 1800K often works well, too.

System 6, Finder only

If you run System 6, Finder only, minimize the amount of memory that the System consumes for best results. For more information, query in the Microsoft Knowledge Base on:

MORE INFORMATION

If you use System 7 or System 6 with MultiFinder, Microsoft recommends allocating 2048K to Word to run the Grammar Checker. Typically, this means the Macintosh must have a total of 4 MB (4096K) of RAM to run the System and have 2048K left over for Word.

If you use System 6 with Finder, you must have minimum of 2 MB (2048K) of RAM installed to use Word's Grammar Checker.
