No Kerning With Adobe Type Manager (ATM) Fonts

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

Adobe Type 1 fonts [installed either as soft fonts or via Adobe Type Manager (ATM) version 2.5] do not print kerned in Word for Windows.

CAUSE

ATM fonts use a Windows 3.0 printer escape call for kerning that is not supported in Word 6.0, so ATM fonts do not print kerned. Word 6.0 bases kerning on the API for Windows 3.1 and later.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows. This problem was corrected in versions 6.0a and later of Word for Windows.

Word 6.0a and later support the API for both Windows 3.0 and 3.1 for the kerning of Adobe Type 1 fonts.
