Error: "The WIN-OS/2 Session Doesn't Support This Application"

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0, 6.0a
  • IBM OS/2 operating system version 2.0, 2.1
  • Microsoft Project for Windows version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

If you run the Word for Windows Setup program under IBM OS/2 version 2.0, Setup immediately fails and the following error message appears: 

   The Win-OS/2 session does not support this application.

CAUSE

The minimum requirement to install and run Word is Windows 3.1. OS/2 version 2.0 provides Windows 3.0 functionality, so it does not meet the minimum requirement for Word.

WORKAROUND

Method 1: Upgrade to OS/2 version 2.1, which provides Windows support 

          equivalent to Windows 3.1.
Method 2: Use Windows 3.1 or later.
