The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0, 6.0a

SYMPTOMS

If field codes are displayed, in-place editing of embedded objects is disabled in Word for Windows. (To toggle between viewing field codes and viewing field results, choose Options from the Tools menu, select the View tab, select or clear the Field Codes check box under Show, and choose OK.)

CAUSE

By design, Word edits object linking and embedding (OLE) 2.0 objects in place only when Show Field Codes is turned off. If you double-click an OLE 2.0 object when field codes are displayed, Word opens the object in a separate application window.
